Winter Activities in Vail, Colorado: A Wonderland for All Ages

Vail is truly a winter wonderland filled with opportunities for adventure, celebration, and relaxation. Whether you’re here to visit or looking to make Vail your home, I’d love to help you find the perfect place to enjoy this incredible lifestyle year-round. Here are some are my favorite insider spots to check out!
Birds of Prey Ski Races at Beaver Creek
One of the most exciting events of the winter season is the Birds of Prey Ski Races at nearby Beaver Creek, running from December 6–15. This prestigious event features both men’s and women’s downhill skiing, showcasing the world’s top athletes as they tackle challenging courses at lightning speeds.
The event isn’t just about the races—there’s plenty of excitement off the slopes, too. Enjoy live music, beer tastings, and a festive atmosphere that makes it a can’t-miss winter tradition.
Outdoor Adventures: Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Snowmobiling
Vail’s slopes are legendary for a reason. With over 5,300 acres of terrain, there’s something for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. My favorite place to ski is Northwoods. It has runs for every level, a great place to lay some turns and ski some mogul's!
Not into skiing? Take in Vail’s spectacular scenery on a gondola ride. It’s a peaceful way to enjoy the winter wonderland from above. You can take gondola one up to mid Vail and see the legendary Gore Range, or ride up the Eagle Bah gondola in Lionshead for spectacular views of Mt.Holy Cross and more.
For a quieter way to enjoy the snow, try snowshoeing or Nordic skiing at the Vail Golf Course Nordic Center. And check out their bottomless soup buffet when you are done. If speed is more your style, head to Vail Pass for an exhilarating snowmobile adventure, zipping through pristine trails surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery.
Holiday Cheer and Family Fun
Vail comes alive during the holidays with festive events for all ages. On December 8th, the Christmas Tree Lighting fills the village with twinkling lights, music, and holiday spirit. Meet me at my office, Engle & Völkers in Vail for some hot Cider with the option to add Whiskey. Sweet treats, and a chance to take home a goodie bag!
From December 12–15, explore the Kris Kringle Market, where local vendors offer handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats, and festive cheer. And don’t forget to bring the kids to meet Santa Claus! He’ll be at Skipper & Scout on December 15th for photos that will create lasting holiday memories.
Relaxation and Romance: Spas and Sleigh Rides
For those seeking relaxation, the Sonnenalp Spa offer luxurious treatments to rejuvenate after a day in the snow. Looking for a romantic winter evening? Cozy up with a sleigh ride through the snow-covered countryside at 4 Eagle Ranch, complete with breathtaking views and the warmth of a crackling fire.
Indoor Activities: Yoga, Axe Throwing, and Ice Skating
Stay active indoors with a yoga session at Gravity Haus, where expert instructors help you stretch and rejuvenate in a welcoming atmosphere. Or, try something unique like axe throwing at the Hyatt in Cascade Village, perfect for adding a little adventure to your day.
For family-friendly fun, glide across the ice at the rinks in Solaris or Lionshead Village, where twinkling lights and a festive atmosphere set the scene.
Culinary and Shopping Delights
Vail’s dining scene is as impressive as its slopes. Savor fine dining at Sweet Basil, Mountain Standard, Elway’s, or La Nonna, or enjoy casual favorites like tacos and my favorite, spicy margarita at El Segundo.
Shopping enthusiasts will adore the boutique shops sprinkled throughout Vail’s villages. From unique gifts to stylish winter gear, you’ll find plenty to explore. Looking for kids clothing? Check out Skipper & Scout!
When winter blankets Vail, Colorado, in shimmering snow, it transforms into a playground for adventurers, relaxation seekers, and food lovers alike. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or a seasoned local, there’s always something new to explore in our vibrant mountain town.
